Key areas of study within heliophysics include space weather, which examines the impact of solar activity on space and terrestrial systems, and the physics of the Sun's corona and solar wind. This field is crucial for understanding the fundamental processes that govern the Sun and its interactions with the solar system, as well as for predicting and mitigating the effects of solar activity on human technology and infrastructure.

NASA defines heliophysics as "(1) the comprehensive new term for the science of the Sun - Solar System Connection, (2) the exploration, discovery, and understanding of Earth's space environment, and (3) the system science that unites all of the linked phenomena in the region of the cosmos influenced by a star like our Sun."
