About Mars Sample Return

§ 02

Mars sample return (Hebrew: החזרת דגימות ממאדים, Hachzarat Degimot Me'Adam; French: retour d'échantillons martiens; German: Mars-Proben-Rückführung) is a proposed mission to collect rock and soil samples on Mars and return them to Earth. This type of mission is often seen as a crucial step in understanding the geology, climate, and potential for past or present life on Mars. The concept involves multiple stages, including landing a spacecraft on Mars, collecting samples, launching them into Mars orbit, and then transporting them back to Earth. NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) have been collaborating on plans for a Mars sample return mission, with potential launch dates in the late 2020s or early 2030s. The mission is considered high-priority by the scientific community due to the unique insights that analyzing Martian samples in Earth-based laboratories could provide.
